Directives in the sermon on the mount

  1. Be happy when people mock and persecute you and lie about you because of Christ, for a great reward waits for you in heaven.
  2. Remember that the ancient prophets were persecuted in the same way.
  3. Let your good deeds shine out for all to see in the same way that a light on a stand shines throughout a house, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.
  4. Don't misunderstand why Christ came. He came to fulfill the law, not to abolish it.
  5. If you are offering a gift to God and remember that someone has something against you, leave your gift and go be reconciled to that person. Then come and offer your gift.
  6. Settle matters quickly with an enemy who is taking you to court. Do it while you are on the way.
  7. If your eye or hand causes you to sin, cut it out and throw it away. It is better to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.
  8. Do not swear at all. Just say yes or no.
  9. Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.
  10. If someone wants to sue you to take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well.
  11. If someone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles.
  12. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.
  13. Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven.
  14. Be perfect, as your Father is perfect.
  15. Be careful not to do your "acts of righteousness" before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
  16. When you give to the needy, do not do it to be honored by men. Rather, give to the needy in secret, so that no one will see except your Father.
  17. When you pray, do not pray to be seen by men.  Rather, pray in secret to your Father, who is unseen.
  18. When you pray, do not keep babbling on like pagans, for they think they will be heard for their many words. Rather, pray as laid out in the Lord's prayer.
  19. When you fast, do not fast to be seen by men. Rather, fast in secret, so know one will know except your Father.
  20. Do not store up treasures for yourself on earth, but store up treasures for yourself in heaven.
  21. Do not worry about your life, what you will eat and drink.
  22. Do not worry about your clothes.
  23. Seek first God's kingdom and his righteousness.
  24. Do not worry about tomorrow.
  25. Do not judge others.
  26. Do not give dogs what is sacred. (?)
  27. Ask, and it will be given to you.
  28. Seek, and you will find.
  29. Knock, and the door will be opened to you.
  30. In everything, do to others what you would have them do to you.
  31. Enter through the narrow gate.
  32. Watch out for false prophets.
