Reflections on 1 Corinthians 8:1

Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.

What a good reminder! One of the things I'm learning through these verses I've been memorizing is how important knowledge is, most notably that God has given us "everything we need for life and godliness" through the knowledge of Himself (2 Peter 1:3).

Yet this knowledge is not meant to make us proud. It is meant to save us and give us hope and joy, but something about knowledge breeds pride. We must remember that this knowledge came to us as a grace from God, and is meant to bring us to worship and to equip us to better love others.

The second part of this verse ties to what I learned in 1 John 3:14 about how our purpose is to love one another. If we are not loving one another, what is the point of our life? This verse gives more insight into what love does: it builds up.

How is what I'm doing building others up? How am I sharing what I have learned, for their good? How am I encouraging the good I see in them? When I look back on my life, will I be amazed at the ways God has used me to build other people up in love? I pray yes!
