Reflections on 2 Peter 1:3

His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us by his own grace and goodness.

2 Peter 1:3

It's hard to grasp (or maybe to believe) the phrase "everything we need." Do I really believe that I have been given everything I need?

According to this verse, we have been given everything we need. Not only for our lives, so that we can be content, but also for godliness, so that we can overcome the power of sin in our lives by the power of the Holy Spirit.

This is a verse to recall when you are doubting. When you are doubting that God loves you or will take care of you, it reminds you that he does love you and take care of you. He has given you everything you need.

When you are doubting whether victory over sin is really possible, remember that this verse says he has given us everything we need for godliness.

We cannot limp through this life grumbling that we are not equipped to be happy with our lives or to be growing more holy. This verse reminds us how rich we are in Christ. We are rich indeed! We have everything we need.

It's also interesting to me that the vehicle of us receiving what we need is knowledge. Knowledge of Christ is how we get what we need. That is a good thing to keep in mind when seeking to know Christ more: realizing that our contentedness and our holiness depends on it. Seek him with all your heart!

Lastly, I love how it says God called us by his own glory and goodness. He is good and glorious, and that should be what attracts us to him. Really, we should wonder at the reality that he chose to make himself known to us at all and invite us to know him.
